Perfect Half Square Triangles

Amazing, Easy and So Accurate..

Friday, June 7, 2013

At last I've finished the quilt for my little David. A present for his 8th birthday.
The dice is about 4.5 inches. The pieces you move around the game are the little blue, red, yellow and green faces next to the snakes and ladders sign. Their faces are embroidered eyes and mouth with a tuft of hair and their noses are studs. So, they snap off for play and then can be popped back on when play time is finished.
I used all scrap fabrics and whatever size my fabric scraps were, for the most part decided size and design as I went along. I had all these flying geese in my stash, so I incorporated them too.
I painted the numbers on the squares with a fabric paint texta in large numbers for little people to read clearly.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY SPECIAL AND GORGEOUS LITTLE MAN
DAVID WHITTINGHAM

ALSO, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS
NIKIA WHITTINGHAM

It is really amazing what you can make with scraps in your stash!!!
I bought only the backing fabric for David's quilt.

Down on sam's farm with Dougie the scarecrow

This is the latest issue of Australia's Country Threads magazine. I have 2 gorgeous projects inside for you. The first is Dougie, a very handsome scarecrow who would prefer just to sit in the sun amid the flowers...well, I'm with him...what better way to spend a lovely sunny day than to sit outside with a good book perhaps, or this issue of Country Threads and a cuppa.
And of course there is Down on Sam's Farm. A tableau of Sam's farm, which includes Sam of course, and his cow, pig, sheep, chicken, birdhouse and flowers. I hope you will take out your sewing supplies and give them all a go. Sew much fun to create.

A quilt for my littel granddaughter

I started making my granddaughter Nikia a quilt about 6 weeks or so ago, but decided I didn't like the fabrics I was using, so I scrapped it and came up with something more colourful and fun.

Her birthday's in June, and I know there's no chance she'll see this, so I thought I would show you all. I actually quilted in block by block using the fancy stitches in my sewing machine. Never before attempted by me and I am so pleased with the result. And now, looking at it objectively, I need to put a little bird or two on the top and left side of the large flower. Yes, I will do that.

Little David's quilt has taken another step towards completion, with a couple of rows of flying geese done so far. I went with different blues in lights and darks. I'm going to be adding some more colours soon...so keep watching this space, lol.

Also working on a new project for Country Threads magazine....here's the bare bones.....

She's going to be gorgeous. Not sure which issue she will be in, but I will keep you informed.

that's it for now....I have the mother of a cold and am going back to bed...best place to be anyway, in this cold and rainy weather.....unfortunately, I think this is a setback which will keep me away from the sewing machine for a few days. :(

Stay safe everyone, in whatever weather you have at your place.

A sneak peek revealed

Remember those sneak peeks a while back of upcoming projects?
Well, here is Punkin.
Her pattern is available free in this months Australian Creating Country Threads magazine.
If you love unusual dolls, I urge you to try her. She is fun to make and just gorgeous when finished.
Punkin's head is .....yep, you guessed it.....a pumpkin. Her hair is vines with pumpkin leaves, stiffened with wire to allow placement.

blog designs

I'm sorry about all the changes in the blog backgrounds and such. I'm trying to set it up so that it is not only visually pleasing to me, and to you, plus easy to navigate for you.
I don't like bland.....boring! And I don't like overly bright......in your face!
So, as I try as many designs as I can to get the right one for both of us, I hope you will bear with me on this crazy visual journey.

ps. I dont like this bland beige

Crazy Quilting

I decided yesterday to clean up my scrap bins. I couldn't bear to toss those scraps!!
So, they had to be made into blocks and used for something. I had a 'light bulb' moment....A crazy patch quilt. The quilt design itself is still in my head, but I'm cleaning out the scrap bins one by one. I started with beige fabrics, then yellows and lastly pinks. Have 1 more to do in the pinks then on to another colour.
Oddly enough....the bins don't seem to be any lighter than when I started!

I love doing these blocks. They take no time at all, and they really have no specific rules. They can be as crazy as you want them to be.

A new pattern available

This is a cute little swag of dolls, hearts and flowers.
As you know, when we girls get into a sewing or quilting group, we like to share. We share ideas, hints and tips, and sometimes fabric swaps.
'Best friends share' would be a great little swag to hang up when you have your best friends around.
I hope you like it.

Flowers

My amazingly gorgeous, thoughtful and just plain super duper the best daughter sent me these flowers on a day when I was feeling particularly down.
She sure does know how to put a smile on my face. Aj, you are simply the best and I love you more than I can say.

At last Blogger has been fixed!

It seems that Blogger have had some problems, which, thankfully are now fixed.
So, let's try and make up some time. (If I can remember what I had to say these last couple of weeks!).

Oh... some sneak previews...
Some of you may know that I design a lot of dolls for the Australian magazine Creating Country Threads.
Here's just a  sneakie for issues coming up

This one below is coming up in Vol13 #12 which should be out any day now. Her name is Punkin, and she is adorable.

What is on my table at the moment???

First up I have 2 quilts on the go. A boy and a girl one. Nothing more to say on these, You'll have to wait until they are finished. Besides, they are a secret for 2 adorable grandies.
Then I have a project folder. This will eventually be a pattern available for purchase. If it turns out the way I want it to, it's going to be the bees knees, lol.
Also, I have a little tote bag in pink with pretty embellishments happening.

I am also still playing with my GO! Accuquilt baby cutter and I'm cutting shapes from my scraps and bagging them for easy finding later on when I need them.

I spend a lot of time watching The Quilt Show plus U-tube on quilting....if you've never tried U-tube for that, I urge you to go there. The information is endless, and I am learning so much every day.

I will close this off for now so as not to overload you with my ramblings, and will be back later.

happy stitching, doll making and quilting

Not so quiet

All's not so quiet now!
We just had a lovely couple of days away. We went to Ballarat and then down to Portland. Lovely weather too.
The batteries have been recharged....
Have to finish a doll for Country Threads mag, then start on another one for them.
2 UFO's need to be finished, and I want to get them done asap.
I pick up my new GO! Accuquilt cutter today. YAY.....not much work going to be done while I play.
And so I spent a lot of money at Hancocks of Paducah on fabric for projects using my new machine. Mmmmmmm can't wait til they arrive.
What else....what else........oh, I've been avidly watching shows from The Quilt Show online and have learned SO much. Therefore, there are tools and stuff I need to buy.......heheheheeeeeeeee...must haves!!!!!!
Since watching and learning from The Quilt Show, I have been bitten by the quilting bug! I know I've made and designed a few basic quilts, but the 'patchworking' of putting the top together has been...I won't say easy, for it has certainly not been, but let's say I got a handle on some basic stuff and went with it. But the actual quilting part....free motion quilting etc...this I have to learn and can't wait.

And last but not least today.... My little girl Nikia is in this months Patchwork & Stitching magazine.
This adorable little baby is named for my equally adorable granddaughter Nikia (9now). The only thing that disappoints me about the doll is that I didn't have blue Prisma pencils to colour her eyes, and my Niki has huge eyes that are blue as blue! I'm pretty sure they will both forgive me this latitude, xxxxx

Another new doll

I was thrilled to find in my mail box this morning, my copy of this month's issue of Country Threads.
My little girl, Patch is sitting right there on the cover page, amongst awesome projects by Michelle Ridgway and Bobbie Small.
If you're a doll maker, I'm sure you'll love making her. She is an absolute delight in the flesh.

Hopefully the home sretch

Well, those injections weren't too bad!! Although I did have my daughter next to me with hands to squeeze...and I did!!
The pain of the bursitis in the hips has severely diminished, for which I am incredibly grateful. Although I'm told it only lasts 3 months!!! grrrrr, isn't there always a catch? lol.

Anyway, not much crafting done lately, have just been relaxing, reading and just vegging out, while I collect my pain free thoughts, lol.

Not a happy camper today

I'm off for an ultrasound and steroid injections into both hips this morning, so yeah, not a happy camper. But! if it takes away only half of my pain, I will instead be a very happy camper, lol.
Wish me luck.

Finished Project

What a better way to start my week than to finish a project.
This is the bag I made from Michelle Ridgway's pattern. I love it.
And so my collection of handmade patchwork tote bags grows.
I also couldn't resist an invitation to join a Bag Pattern of the month Club.
http://www.bagmakingpatterns.com/

I think I'm on a bag roll. Going to spend some time looking through the Club info and I do love the first bag off the rank....

My project so far

While watching the cricket this evening, I needle turned the stitchery and scallop to my stripes in the Michelle Ridgway bag I'm making. The fabrics I chose are turning out better than I had hoped.

Who am I stitching?

The last few days I've been working on a project for myself, for the simple joy I feel when making something from another designer.
I fell in love with this tote from Michelle Ridgway, in Country Threads Vol 13 #8.

Being a collector of handmade bags and a lover of stitchery designs, how could I resist?
I've done the stitchery and chosen my fabrics; from the Botany range by Lauren and Jessi Jung.

Well, onward.....more friends to visit
